little hands, little scenes

When I made my appliqué/printed pillows the other week, my niece stopped by for a visit and couldn't believe her luck that she ran into the motherlode of colorful flowers and birds and butterflies. When I poured them out in front of her at our dining room table, she kept arranging them over and over into little scenes. Complete with commentary as she laid them out, like a mini-art-director-in-the-making. So I decided to make a kit for her with the extras that didn’t make it onto the pillows.

I made two really simple scenes cut from felt so her little canvas could be reversible – a meadow on one side, and a tree scene on the other. I sewed the felt grass and branches into place, then I added Velcro to the back of each appliqué. All the elements roll up into an old coffee can so she can recreate the scenes over and over, and the Velco sticks to the felt, so she can place each piece anywhere and it will stick until she wants to move it. You can check out the process here, and look for this and other kits in my Etsy store, coming soon!

I love this! Felt scenes is something the gets overlooked all too often!

Although I don't still have it, I remember when I was a kid, my parents did something similar. My father found a scrap piece of wood and covered it with a piece of green felt. This was the "canvas" that all the scenes took place. Then he and my mother bought different color pieces of felt and cut out all kinds of shapes- people, animals, plants, houses- and then all kinds of detail pieces- clothes for the people as well as hair, petals and leaves for flowers, doors, windows, chimneys for the houses, etc. All were kept in a bag that was pinned to the back of the canvas. I'll tell you what, I got more pleasure out of that as a kid! I could sit there for hours playing with it! Perfect for at home, long trips, when you're sick, anything. I know that when I have kids someday, I will be sure to make them one.

Bottom line: Felt is Fantastic!

I love this idea- it reminds me of my favourite 'fuzzy felts' that I played with when I was small.

Rachel, the Etsy shop isn't stocked yet. I'll post when it is, but thanks for the advance enthusiasm -- I can't wait to join the Etsy movement!

And how did I miss Fuzzy Felts when I was little?!
