inaugural camping trip
May 11, 2009 We lucked into the best site in the whole campground this weekend. A tucked-away spot for whopping my husband in dominos, tipping back beer around the fire, and watching the full moon rise.
I couldn’t suppress my inner set decorator nerd and packed my favorite tablecloths along with the s’mores fixings. And the answer to whether it’s possible to cook cherry dumplings over a campfire? A resounding yes. I think you could actually hear Mike’s eyes roll when I busted out my jars of pre-mixed flour and cinnamon. He is a constant witness to my over-ambitious plans, but the dumplings were surprisingly easy. Car camping makes these dork-out moments possible. That and a cast-iron pan.
We came home smelling like river swimming, campfire and bug spray. Glorious.

Gorgeous pictures! I love camping, except for the bugs and sleeping on the ground. =)
looks amazing!
sooo, lovely!
I can smell the damper, the insect repellant, the smoke from the fire. Lovely. I miss camping - for me it would include a swag. I could include the smell of dew on the canvas.
it looks like a lovely weekend. we are planning our first attempt at camping with twin toddlers. i anticipate the day to be bordering on gnarly but the night may still hold some time for beer and dominoes. i miss those days. we recently found a great camping area in malibu canyon and think it might be perfect, not too far but not too close.
Great pics and I love the cherry dumpling idea, thanks for sharing the recipe!
What a lovely post. You inspire me to make our camping trips more "pretty" Normally we are all covered in dust from the outback of Australia, but some pretty quilts would look even better with a fine coating of red dust. I can't wait to try the cherry dumplings!
Lovely! River swimming is my favorite. I love floating on my back and drifting down stream on the current. Thanks for the photos. They've got me on the phone planning a camping trip right now!
Your photos are wonderful. I really enjoyed them!
great photographs!
i did crack a cast iron pot over a campfire once though. i thought that could never happen but now i know.
