nature's salad bar

You may have noticed that I like to dabble in foraging. Like this nature-meets-danger cocktail, nasturium pesto, and foraged lemon curd.

But that’s nothing compared to what others harvest in the wild. I recently checked in with some urban foragers for a story I reported. I got to tag along as Forage SF searched for feral spinach along a state beach; talk with a group in LA that leads people with fruit pickers through the streets of LA to pluck public fruit (they didn’t make it into the story, boo!); and over in Oakland, I went for a walk with Asiya Wadud of Forage Oakland. She lovingly draws maps of fruit trees in her neighborhood and organizes backyard barters for hundreds of neighbors. This part of her story will warm your heart.

You can listen below, and see some photos right here.

reading things like this encourages me to see the community around us as more than just the market. we stopped in at a college garden space today after i collected my weekly market haul. there were huge amounts of food to be gathered. the local college students had run a spring garden project, maybe 10 small patches planted and observed. now that school is out, all the food is growing and there is no one there to harvest. so, with the good grace of the local itinerant who made our kids pancakes, we went through and collected pounds of peaches, chard and beet greens, lettuce and squash. it is amazing to think this food would not find a home or a belly without discoveries like today.

i only wish the college kids had thought to organize some way to let the community know and participate with this food source.maybe i will make that suggestion to them next semester.

i loved your radio piece. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before there is a Forage Seattle. And your greens will be delivered on recumbent bikes!

Following my exploration, billions of persons on our planet receive the loan at different banks. Thence, there is great possibilities to get a bank loan in every country.
