yes we can

Evan Sung for The New York Times
"Suspending plums in time, and syrup."
That phrase alone should make you want to read this recent article on the revival of small batch, home canning, in the New York Times. I love the idea of these jars sitting on our shelves like characters with story lines, prompting memories of certain farms or farmer's markets or the day we canned.
And for you local SFers, check out this project. You can help with a community canning project, or just buy the finished goods. Can't go wrong, either way.

Kelly, when one "cans" as much as you do..... where might they find the best deal on small mason jars? I'm going to be canning pickles this year and an assortment of fruit jams as gifts and party favors over the course of the coming year. I'm in the market for 50+ jars.....any tips?
Hi Netrez, you're out of my canning league with 50 jars! I usually pick up a half dozen or so at my local hardware store. My sister actually made strawberry jam with her daughter for her 3rd bithday, and found it was cheaper to pick a few dozen up locally than have then shipped because of the shipping cost. Plus, you can really see what size you want. So I'm afraid I don't have a great suggestion for you, other than your hardware or grocery store. This is the time of year when the canning supplies should be out in full force!
