green mountains, here we come
Jul 1, 2009 We’re trying an experiment this summer, and relocating to my Vermont sister’s backyard for a few weeks. Her husband happens to make beautiful timber frame houses and barns, so the whole family is going to help raise one on their property, maybe even in time for us to stay in it.
We’re trying to pull off a work-vacation combo. So here’s what my brain looked like before leaving. This was when I was getting down to the nitty-gritty and slowly descending into my own personal whirl of mania.

But you know what? It’s all okay. In fact, it’s better than okay because on the other side of this to-do list are summer rainstorms and lightening bugs and lake swimming and bare feet and canning strawberries and driving down gravel roads with the windows down.
I’ll be sure to let you know how it’s going. In the meantime, have a great 4th. Hopefully, we're going to be camping on a secret island in the middle of one of our favorite lakes.

Wasn't there a whole bit on NPR about about lists?
My favorite part of that story was the quote about how satisfying it is to cross something off your list :)
i remember looking at the green surrounding me one late spring and realizing "this is what i have stayed here for all these years..." only i didn't -- after 17 years i left -- that was 11 years ago and i still miss it (or that feeling of roots anyway)...enjoy!
that sounds like a super fun and lovely vacation! What a great experience that will be!
Hi Kelly,
While you're in VT, here are a few good side trip ideas . . .
Be sure to go to Delectable Mountain in Brattleboro - delicious, beautiful fabrics and amazing buttons. My Mother's Day wish was a half-hour in there alone, and I got it! And if Robyn is with you, she can hang out at Sprout with the kids - Nora loves to go there and play (also cleanest bathroom in brattleboro). Check out Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich (across the river from Dartmouth in Hanover) - Ada's probably a good age for the water activities and walking paths outside, and tons of great stuff to learn inside. Last but not least, don't miss Burdick's for beautiful chocolates - in Walpole, NH not far from Brattleboro and WELL worth the trip! Their little grocery next door to the restaurant/chocolate shop has great housemade sausage, rillettes, etc. and wonderful cheeses - we always bring a cutting board, knife, and bottle of wine and plan our picnic when we get there. Have a great trip! Hi to all the family!
