honey love

We pulled the first frames of capped, golden honey out of the hive this past weekend. It tastes pure and fresh and triumphant.

I cannot get my head around the fact that these thousands of bees have collected flower nectar and turned it into food. I don’t think anyone could invent anything that sounds more miraculous.

How cool! I'm SO terrified of bees though. Do you ever get stung?

fantastic! We're so sad Tim doesn't think he's going to get any honey from his hives this year. Maybe he can share credit for yours...

Congrats on the awesome honey harvest! I am interested in keeping bees but I'm worried about the neighbors. We have a small backyard that is kind of sunken and hidden, but we are surrounded on three sides by other houses and there are houses next to the other houses. The whole backyard is maybe 20' x 20', give or take. I'm worried the bees will sting a neighborhood children or people who are allergic. Do you have any advice? Do you mind sharing a bit about your bee-keeping situation? (Feel free to e-mail me instead of replying here.) Thanks and I love your blog!

Caitlin,

I was going to keep them in our backyard but my downstairs neighbor is dangerously allergic. I'll email you separately, but in case anyone else is curious, I dropped little notes on my neighbors' doors explaining what I was up to, and I was shocked by their enthusiasm. You can orient the hives so bees fly up and out of the area, and there are usually local beekeeping associations that can be really helpful in these situations. in the end though, I put the hive in a friend's backyard because of my neighbor.

Overall, I can't recommend it enough -- and there are plenty of urban beekeepers who will tell you the same thing!
