first day of fall still life

On the dogwalk this morning, I foraged these little-bitty pinecones and a fallen sprig of eucalyptus. I think these may be the makings of a fall wreath. But in the meantime, I tipped them onto a cheery red platter and this little burst of color and texture has made me happy all day long.

There's nothing like a spontaneous still life to kick off a new season.

Update: Prue kindly shared this trick for preserving eucalyptus or other foraged greens for wreaths. Thanks, Prue -- I love learning stuff like that!

I'm not sure exactly how to do it (google it), but if you put the stalks of the eucalyptus in glycerine the leaf takes up the glycerine and becomes more pliable and doesn't dry out and become crackly and dead. Just wondered if that bit of information might help your wreath making....

This makes me yearn to spend thanksgiving with you guys, foraging for our centerpieces. Wish you could share a cuppa right now while watching the firey leaves (can you tell our newspaper didn't come?!)
