labor and no-labor day
Sep 7, 2009 The epic Bay Bridge construction here in San Francisco elbowed in on our holiday weekend. Not that I’m complaining. I can really dork out on these enormous engineering stories, and standing there underneath a gaping hole in a bridge that is almost as familiar to me as my own home was a thrilling and spooky experience. You can hear what I was up to this weekend here or here.
But we did manage to sneak a day of utter relaxation in ahead of the weekend. We spent an entire day poolside at a new-old hotel in Santa Cruz with some great new friends. It was absolute indulgence: ordering breakfast and then lunch and strawberry daiquiris poolside, lounging and laughing the whole day away, taking dips in the hotel's saltwater pool, and then a plunge in the chilly California sea.
Honestly, we’ve never done anything like that before. Considering that we take every single vacation with family (who we love dearly, don’t get me wrong) and that we honeymooned in a gratefully borrowed home in Nova Scotia, our one-night vacation felt so stinking indulgent. I kept thinking Robin Leach was waiting in the wings somewhere in a robe, with a flute of champagne in hand.
I could certainly get used to this.
