a little less wise

My wisdom teeth came out Wednesday. In between lying with bags of frozen peas on each cheek and long naps and eating instant pudding, I am slowly making progress on my Natalie Chanin tunic. After reviewing one seam from yesterday, I realize that my slighty-fogged-from-painkillers-mind may not be the best for attempting tidy, even stitches. But it’s a calming activity to return to during my long stints on the couch. And I figure it will be a good, if unexpected, souvenir of this downtime.

That, and my teeth. That’s right. The doctor packed them nice and neat into a little baggie, which is now on my beside table. I pour them into my palm a couple times a day and they make a soft little clinking sound like dice. Somehow, it's comforting.

And even though I don't like the regular throbbing that has been keeping me company, I have to admit that I'm almost enjoying a few days to be quiet and still and well-looked after.

One more thing before I pad back to the couch and put my head down. I can't eat berries for a while, but if you are looking for something to make this weekend that tastes like spring, may I suggest this strawberry clafouti that I made the other week? It looked like a cracked lavabed of strawberry goodness, with rivers of  juice and baked berries that tasted intensely strawberryish. The whole thing is puffy and light, and then deflates when you cut into it. But the taste certainly does not. So this is my plea to everyone with perfectly-working teeth: Eat this, because I cannot. And enjoy.

Hope you are back to chewing soon! The link to the recipe is a bit broken so I'm going to make strawberry dumplings today instead of clofuti.....Happy Easter to you and Mike!

I'm still wise, but only half so - my top wisdom teeth have never made any kind of appearance (even in x-ray), and my bottom ones have never come through. But I have just broken my wrist so I feel your pain, though in my wrist, not my jaw! Hope you're feeling better soon.

And even though I don't like strawberries, that clafouti does look delicious.
